Year out, year in... What to do instead of useless resolutions (ditch those!)

December 16, 20244 min read

The end of the year is always tempting in terms of talking about the same topics: visions and goals for next year; some even still talk about New Year’s Resolutions, which have long proven to be useless… especially when they’re not backed by our subconscious beliefs, and when we don’t do the pre-work to clear and replace those limiting, disempowering beliefs that keep us from achieving what we intend to.

Anyway, this article isn’t about visions and goals, although they are important, and I’m often surprised how many people don’t have a written vision at all…

But because I know lots of other people will talk about visions and goals before the end of the year, I want to focus on something slightly different:

Your heart’s desire.

Here’s my question for you:

Is what you do professionally still aligned with your heart’s desire?

We live in a time where this is becoming ever more critical, for many reasons:

For example, we need an extra portion of resilience. Whatever your specific situation is, or whatever your degree of knowledge is about what’s really going on in the world, the time we’re living in requires most of us to be extra-resilient.

Second, courage. Courage to stand up for our truth, for what’s right. Because if you’re not swimming with the mainstream, if you know more than most people about current events and you feel a need to express your point of view and share your knowledge for the good of humanity and for a better future, that requires courage.

Third, persistence. We still gotta be able to get going when the going gets tough. Because even though I firmly believe we’re moving in the right direction, we may still be in for some tough experiences this coming year. Radical change doesn’t always happen without pain. And this time around, only a significant shift will do. It is an exciting time to be alive, but not one without major challenges.

Resilience, courage, and persistence are way easier to find inside of you when what you do for work is aligned with your heart’s desire. You could also call it purpose. But I often find that purpose is a word that sounds too big and scary for many… like it needs to be something super serious, or something that’s crazy hard to figure out.

When you ask your heart what it wants, on the other hand, it may become just a little easier.

So, here’s my question again: Is what you do professionally, your work, still aligned with your heart’s desire? – Feel into this question and answer it honestly.

If it’s a yes, then great! Keep doing what you’re doing, and keep growing in it.

But if it’s a no, then it’s time to do some deeper digging.

Your heart holds not only your unique wisdom (unique because it’s acquired by you and no one else), but also your deepest desires. So maybe it’s time to (re-learn to) connect with your heart, to take some time to figure out what it is you really want, what it is your heart wants you to do.

For that, you will need to connect with your heart. Close your eyes and picture your heart, in any way you’d like to see it. Maybe place a hand on your heart area and breathe into it. Your heart emanates your most potent electromagnetic field, so it is truly powerful. And it holds your most precious knowledge. It knows. Observe, listen, feel… What does it have to say to you?

Then sit down with a journal and start jotting down the information you received. Any ideas, whatever your heart sent to your mind.

If you’re having a hard time with this exercise because you are not used to listening to your heart like this, then maybe these questions can help:

What would you love to do?

What would you enjoy doing?

What’s the impact you’d love to see from your work?

What would your ideal day look like?

Who do you want to share your working time with?

And where?

What would be true fun for you?

What would give you joy?

See, if we don’t give ourselves time to dream, then we may never have that fulfilled life we all want. And yes, dreams do turn into visions (here’s that word again, haha).

I hope this article inspires you to listen to your heart when it comes to the experience you want to live next year, despite all the challenges that may be awaiting us all as humans, and you specifically. Doing what you love for a living could make those challenges a bit lighter, and you may even find yourself resolving challenges for humanity, who knows… in the smaller or in the bigger scheme.

I wish you and us all a marvelous year ahead. I wish all of humanity that we can take a major leap forward into the world we want, ideally skipping a few steps… if you know what I mean. Let’s hold high vibrations to make it so!
